Yes, you must register and title your vehicle in South Dakota.
Where can I register my vehicle?
You can register your vehicle in person at the South Dakota DMV.
What will I need?
- A completed Application for Motor Vehicle Title & Registration (Form MV-608)
- If your vehicle is under 7 years old and under 16,000lbs gross weight, a completed Salvage, Recovered Theft, and Uniform Damage Disclosure Statement (Form MV-610)
- Your current title
When do I need to register my vehicle?
You need to register and title your vehicle within 90 days of moving to South Dakota.
Is there a fee?
Unless you paid at least 4% in taxes to your previous state, you will be charged a 4% excise tax on the amount you paid for your vehicle. Is an emission test required?
No.
Is proof of liability insurance required?
You must prove financial responsibility in one of four ways:
- Owner’s policy of liability insurance
- The bond of a surety company
- Certificate of Deposit or securities in the amount of $50,000 deposited with the State Treasurer
- Certificate of Self-Insurance (minimum 26 vehicles)
