You’ve got options! If you currently have a REAL ID or a Limited Purpose credential, you may change your driver’s license and vehicle registration address through a single online portal.
If you prefer snail mail, you may change your address by mail by sending the required documents here:

If you prefer to talk to a human, or do not have a REAL ID or a Limited Purpose credential, you may update your driver’s license and vehicle registration at the same time at a DMV Service Center.

What will I need when I notify the DMV?
If you’re applying online:
- Your driver’s license number
- Your Social Security number
- Your date of birth
- Your email address (required)
- Proof of residency
If you’re applying by mail:
- Two proofs of residency
- Your completed driver’s license application
- Your payment
If you are applying in person and have a REAL ID or a Limited Purpose credential:
- Two proofs of residency
- Your completed driver’s license application
- Your payment

When do I need to complete my vehicle registration change of address?
You have 60 days to update your vehicle registration address.

Do I need to get a new driver’s license?
Unless you qualify for reciprocity, you must get a Washington DC driver’s license.
Where can I get a new driver’s license?
The bad news: you’ll need to visit a Washington DC DMV service center. We hate to say it, but services are not available online.
What will I need?
- Your out-of-state driver’s license or a certified driving record
- Your Driver License Application form
- Two proofs of Washington D.C. residence
- Proof of your Social Security number
- Proof of identity
Be sure to read up on acceptable documents, as you cannot use the same document to fit multiple requirements!
Do I need to take a driving test?
If your out-of-state license has been expired for 90 days or more, you must take a road test and a written test. Otherwise, plan on taking just a vision test.
Is there a fee?
Washington DC charges $47 for a license that is valid for 8 years, visit the fee page to find more information.

When do I need to register my vehicle?
Don’t sit on it — you’ll need to register your vehicle within 30 days of your move.

You must pass a vehicle inspection. You may also be exempt from inspection depending on your vehicle.

Yes, you must have minimum liability insurance.

You must cancel or forfeit your vehicle registration and tags once you’ve registered the vehicle in your new state. Luckily, you can do this through an online portal. You can also mail your tags here:
