In some states, you have less than 30 days to update your driving records and/or vehicle registration with the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV), so now’s the time to act!

You’ve got options! If you currently have a REAL ID or a Limited Purpose credential, you may change your driver’s license and vehicle registration address through a single online portal.

If you prefer snail mail, you may change your address by mail by sending the required documents here:

If you prefer to talk to a human, or do not have a REAL ID or a Limited Purpose credential, you may update your driver’s license and vehicle registration at the same time at a DMV Service Center.

What will I need when I notify the DMV?

  • Your Social Security number
  • Your date of birth
  • Your email address (required)
  • Proof of residency

Unless you qualify for reciprocity, you must get a Washington DC driver’s license.

The bad news: you’ll need to visit a Washington DC DMV service center. We hate to say it, but services are not available online.

What will I need?

Be sure to read up on acceptable documents, as you cannot use the same document to fit multiple requirements!

Do I need to take a driving test?
If your out-of-state license has been expired for 90 days or more, you must take a road test and a written test. Otherwise, plan on taking just a vision test.

Is there a fee?
Washington DC charges $47 for a license that is valid for 8 years, visit the fee page to find more information.

Where can I complete my vehicle registration change of address?
You will need to update your vehicle registration in person at a Washington DC DMV service center.

When do I need to register my vehicle?

You must pass a vehicle inspection. You may also be exempt from inspection depending on your vehicle.

Is proof of liability insurance required?
Yes, you must have minimum liability insurance.

Do I need to return my license plates?

You must cancel or forfeit your vehicle registration and tags once you’ve registered the vehicle in your new state. Luckily, you can do this through an online portal. You can also mail your tags here:

Be sure to keep your insurance until you receive a receipt of your registration cancellation! You may also qualify for a registration refund.
