We hate to say it, but you’ll need to visit the Arizona Motor Vehicles Division. Save yourself a few minutes of wait time, and begin your application in advance.

What will I need?

When do I need to get a new driver’s license?

Act fast — you’ll need to obtain an Arizona driver’s license immediately if you:

  • Work in Arizona (other than for seasonal agricultural work)
  • Are registered to vote in Arizona
  • Obtain a state license or pay school tuition fees at the same rate as an Arizona resident
  • Have a business that has an office in Arizona, and that bases and operates vehicles in Arizona
  • Remain in Arizona for a total of 7 months or more during any calendar year, regardless of your permanent residence

Do I need to take a driving test?

Nope. Save your real driving skills for the road. You will, however, have to pass a vision exam.

Is there a fee?

Ah, the age-old question. Visit the Arizona fees page for more details. Costs vary based on age for a regular driver license:

  • Ages 16-39: $25.00
  • Ages 40-44: $20.00
  • Ages 45-49: $15.00
  • Ages 50 : $10.00

Yes.

Where can I register my vehicle?

You’ll need to visit the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division in person. Sorry to say, but services are not available online.

What will I need?

  • Your Arizona DMV Title and Registration Application
  • Your out-of-state title (or registration, if the title is held by the lienholder)
  • Your Level I vehicle inspection, if your out-of-state title and/or registration is missing
  • Your out-of-state license plates

When do I need to register my vehicle?

Don’t sit on it — you’ll need to register your vehicle immediately after your move.

Is there a fee?

We don’t fault you for asking. Arizona charges a $4.00 title fee, an $8.00 registration fee, and a $1.50 air quality research fee. Additionally, Arizona charges a vehicle license tax (VLT) in lieu of a personal property tax charged by other states.

Is an emission test required?

It depends. You only need an emission test in specific Phoenix and Tucson areas. Visit Arizona’s Department of Environmental Quality page to learn more, or call toll free at 1-877-692-9227.
