Meet Our Interns: Dawn Macri, Content Marketing and SEO Intern

Meet Dawn — a former Content Marketing and SEO Intern at Updater. Originally from Texas, Dawn is no stranger to moving; in fact, she moved from the Lone Star State to the U.K. (where she grew up), to New York, and now lives in New Jersey! We chatted with this adventurous English major about her time at Updater, her favorite things, and beyond.

What’s your school and major?

I’m an English major from Montclair State University.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from Texas but I grew up in the U.K. before moving to NYC. Now I live in New Jersey (it isn’t so bad).

What is your internship role?

Content Marketing and SEO

Why did you apply to Updater?

I knew I wanted to intern with a startup, and the internship sounded like an exciting opportunity to combine my love of writing with my interest in SEO. Updater, in particular, seemed like a great company to learn from, plus it was clear that they go to great lengths to show their appreciation for their employees. How could I not apply?

Was it what you expected?

It was even better! Really though.

What was one way the company surprised you?

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but everyone is so genuinely friendly and down-to-earth. It’s rare to find a company with such awesome people throughout.

How is this different from other internships?

I’ve had internships where I spent the day running errands or I didn’t see anyone for hours, but this was so different. I was included in company-wide and departmental meetings, and I felt like my ideas were truly valued.

What is the coolest thing you’ve ever accomplished at Updater?

I got to help create the copy for a direct mailer and that was really cool. Most of my writing has been in a digital format, so it was exciting to see it in a totally new form.

When you aren’t at Updater or school, what do you spend your time doing?

I cook a lot, eat a LOT, and I like to explore new places. I’m fairly new to New Jersey and pretty outdoorsy, so finding a new hiking trail is always a bonus.

What is your favorite book?

That’s tough. Either “100 Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez, or “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle” by Haruki Murakami.

What was your internship project and what did you learn?

My first internship project was to create the copy for an email drip campaign, and the second project was to create copy for a direct mailer. Both of them taught me the value of succinct writing and how to make copy conversational. I also got to work across different teams, which was a great experience.

What are your key takeaways from this internship?

Teamwork really does make the dream work.

What is your advice to the Updater interns of the future?

It goes by really fast, so take advantage of every opportunity you have to learn something new. Be a sponge and take in all the information you can.

What will you miss most about Updater?

The snacks and fun events are awesome, and they wouldn’t be half as enjoyable if it wasn’t for the people. I love getting to write every day while working alongside a fabulous team. The pupdaters are a huge bonus too!

What’s one song you can always jam out to?

“Carry on Wayward Son,” by Kansas.

If you could eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?

Sushi. All the sushi.

Which Disney character would you be and why?

Belle. She’s into books and gets lost in stories, but at the same time, she’s both compassionate and spirited. She stands up for what she believes in and isn’t afraid of ruffling feathers.

You’ve just been booked a one-way flight to anywhere in the world, where are you going?

Vietnam. Or Oslo. Or Amsterdam. Or… gosh, this is too hard. There are SO many places I want to see. New Zealand. Final answer.
