Meet Updater: Andrew Montauk, Success Manager

Frequent flyer, map enthusiast, BBQ lover… Who are we talking about? Why, it’s Andrew, our resident world traveler and Success Manager! Learn from Andrew’s pro moving tips and see what else makes this native New Yorker unique.

Where did you grow up?

Westchester, just north of NYC. I was born in the city though, and at that time I lived just a few blocks from what is now Updater’s new office in Union Square.

Do you have a moving horror story?

I only have a vague memory of it because I was 3. When we moved from NYC to the suburbs, the moving truck was a little “flexible” with its arrival time at our new house. We arrived at the new house in the evening, and the truck was supposed to show up around 8pm… It didn’t. 2am rolled around, and still no truck. Needless to say, my parents were a tad stressed about this (but I was fine, as I was asleep… on the carpet).

They showed up around 2:30am, complete with an excuse about stopping somewhere for dinner (which, in hindsight, makes no sense — given the time). The whole thing would’ve been a lot easier had cell phones and GPS been around, but a few minor heart attacks later, we had all of our things back.

What’s the largest item you’ve ever had to carry on the subway?

Probably my guitar.

What’s your best piece of moving advice?

Start packing early!

How many times have you moved?

I’m counting 7, which includes 5 moves within NYC.

You’re about to move. What would you make sure to never do again?

I would make sure not to pack certain important items without first making a note as to where I packed them. I did this the right way the last time I moved and it saved a lot of time.

What’s the best part about working on a small team?

Besides being part of a tight-knit group, being on a small team means you have more of a voice than you do on larger teams, which is great when it comes to sharing ideas.

What’s your favorite Updater feature? Why?

I have to say it’s the Update Accounts feature. I have a few dozen accounts I need to update every time I move (which is more than the average), so being able to take care of all of them in one shot is really efficient.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

“Black Dog” by Led Zeppelin.

You can only eat one food for the rest of your life. What is it?

Barbecued beef brisket. The real stuff from Texas. (Black’s BBQ in Lockhart, Texas comes to mind.)

What are 2 personal tidbits about you?

I’m a frequent flyer miles enthusiast. I’ve flown around the world for free, including 2 trips to Asia in first class — and I still have the pajamas! Also, geography is a big interest of mine. I find maps way more interesting than most people do.
