We’ve got good news – you don’t have to be a technology expert to program a DIRECTV remote. By following the steps in this guide, you’ll be up and running in no time.

If you’ve been enjoying DIRECTV for a while but have been running into issues with your remote, we’re here to help troubleshoot that too. After all, nobody wants to have to deal with pesky remote-related challenges during TV time. As you read through this detailed guide, you’ll find step-by-step instructions for configuring your DIRECTV remote in a variety of scenarios, and tips for quickly addressing any issues that may arise during the process.

Understanding your DIRECTV remote control

First of all, you should be aware that there are two types of DIRECTV remote controls: the Genie remote and the universal remote control. The Genie remote has a rounded top and allows you to turn your TV off and on, adjust the volume, see descriptions of available TV programs, and so much more. The universal remote has squared corners and can control up to 4 devices, such as your DIRECTV receiver, TV, and two audio or video receivers like DVD players, or stereos.

You’ll want to program both of these DIRECTV remotes when you receive them and the following instructions detail how you can set them up to work with your TV and other devices.

Troubleshooting a DIRECTV remote

To troubleshoot your DIRECTV remote, check your remote buttons, batteries, and modes. Be certain that the buttons are not locked in the pushed position by running your fingertips across them.

To test the batteries, hold-down any remote button and check for the following:

  • Green light – indicates the batteries are in good condition.
  • Fast-blinking green light – indicates the batteries are in the good condition but may need replacement soon.
  • Slow-blinking green light or no light – indicates your remote needs replacement immediately.

If your remote is no longer responsive and can’t switch stations or regulate volume, first ensure you have a clear line of sight to the receiver. Next, check to make sure the remote operates the receiver.

Push your mode switch to the left until you see the DIRECTV sign at the top of the remote. Then, switch the input mode if your remote can operate your receiver, but not other gadgets. Toggle the input sign on the mode switch (for example TV, AV1, or AUX).

If none of these steps work, you may have to reconfigure the remote using the instructions above.
