Meet Updater: Ken Davis, VP of Finance

Please say “hello” to Ken Davis, our VP of Finance, who is as full of travel adventures and stories as he is spreadsheets! Ken joined Updater via our acquisition of Bridgevine in December 2019 and has been loving it ever since.

Where are you from?

Philly. The city of brotherly love. Well, the suburbs of the city of brotherly love! Close enough.

What are two personal tidbits most people don’t know about you?

One of my favorite places in the world is underwater in a coral reef. Only fish. No cell phones. Just the sound of the scuba bubbles.

This one time in Arizona, I started playing some Beatles song on a Steinway Piano in a museum. A crowd gathered. Cell phones were recording. I might be in a YouTube video somewhere. Who knows?!

We need to get our hands on that video. Let’s shift gears. Do you have a moving horror story & how many times have you moved?

I’ve moved 3 times and, thankfully, nothing horrific! Just a few of the predictable but unfortunate dings & scratches your stuff usually gets as it’s being shuffled around.

Predictable, but unfortunate – that’s a great way to put it. In an effort to help our movers avoid those predictabilities altogether, what’s your best piece of moving advice?

If you didn’t use a professional mover, get a few friends to help you move your stuff on your moving day. Celebrate after you’re done by paying for pizza or wings (and booze). That way, it feels more like a fun day with friends than a stressful move.

Speaking of fun, have you ever carried anything heavy for a move on public transportation?

This wasn’t for a move, but does involve moving strange items… a long time ago, a family friend used to take the Philadelphia subway & bus to go hunting. Yes, with all the hunting gear. And, uh, yes, on the way back, all the spoils of their hunt came back with them on the bus. And, yes, this is a true story…

What’s your favorite Updater tool or feature?

I’m the kind of person who tends to forget a few things here and there (like my jacket, Airpods…don’t ask), so I love the Updater moving checklist to organize everything. And, checking stuff off the list feels really good!

Sure does. You know what else feels good? Working for a company you love. What motivates you to come to work every day?

My colleagues at Updater. I mean, we’re pretty awesome. Who doesn’t like to work with all of these nice, smart people?

Exactly. But, let’s say it’s the zombie apocalypse. Where do you and your awesome colleagues hide?

I’d hang out in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Great weather, perfect scenery, sparsely populated, and abundant food sources.

But, I guess the point of “hiding” isn’t revealing where you’re going to hide. Shoot…

Now that we know where to find you, if you were stranded in Mpumalanga, what’s the one song you could listen to nonstop, on repeat?

The Scientist by Coldplay. “I’m going back to the start…”

“Ask me your questions…” If you could ask any business leader questions, who would you want to interview?

Satya Nadella. When working at Microsoft, I witnessed, first-hand, how he transformed the company by building a culture around empathy and mindfulness. Amazing.

And, bonus question: favorite SNL skit?

Anything with Phil Hartman, RIP.
