Utility companies: what is a concierge?

Many of your customers move homes.

Many of those customers who move will also need to handle other tasks besides electric or gas setup. They need to tackle tasks like setting up internet service, transferring insurance policies, booking a moving company or renting a truck, updating their address everywhere, forwarding mail, and more.

Knowing that your customers need to tackle those moving tasks, why not help them before they even have to ask?

In Japan, there’s a hospitality practice called omotenashi. At the heart of it, omotenashi is a philosophy of service that says: great businesses should anticipate customer needs without having to ask what’s needed.

You’ve likely seen omotenashi in practice:

  • When you’re in Disney World and think to yourself, “Wow, how did they think of that?”

  • When you walk into a department store on a rainy day; mats and umbrella bags are provided.

  • When you buy a computer monitor and the box has a built-in handle for easy transport.

Your utility may even already provide creative products and services like this today. Warranties and protection plans, bill flexibility programs, solar credits, and much more are all examples of omotenashi in practice at utilities today.

So, back to the original question – why not help your customers with moving tasks before they have to ask?

You can, and you should. And you can leverage Updater to do so.

What is a moving concierge?

A concierge is typically defined as a person employed to make arrangements. In our case, we’re a group of people employed to make moving arrangements for others. If we want to get extra technical, we’re a group of people who build technology solutions to enable moving arrangements.

We act as a concierge in two ways: over the phone via our call center, and digitally, via our moving app.
